Abstract

In this article, we present a case study whose objective was to analyze the regional management of state higher education institutions by conducting a theoretical review of innovation systems approaches. We carried out a qualitative interpretive study and qualitative data analysis, with a case study design. The information collection techniques used were diverse: documentary analysis and interviews. The results indicate that regional management in state higher education institutions has evolved since their inception, following the governance guidelines established by the educational institutions for their development and regional innovation systems. However, the results show regional challenges in terms of financial sustainability, branch management, academic offerings, inter-university articulation, and governance.
