A Pedagogical Anthropology Based on the Human Gesture

Abstract

This article presents a schematic description of the pedagogical research of the French anthropologist and linguist Marcel Jousse (1886-1961).


This author's studies on childhood and educational processes are almost unknown, as is the rest of his extensive teaching in other fields. Jousse created a unique anthropological model that he called, at various stages of its development, "anthropology of gesture," "anthropology of gesture and rhythm," and "anthropology of mimism". His teaching was mainly oral and face-to-face, rather than written, although during his lifetime he published some scientific memoirs in specialized magazines, in addition to the founding work of his anthropology on oral style.


In the present writing, the application of the Joussian “anthropological laws” to the field of education is explained in a synthetic way.
